designer I admire

Hi! Today I will talk to you about a fashion designer whom I admire, Vivienne Westwood, an icon and
pioneer of punk style. Although my interest goes far beyond that, Westwood was a pioneer in creating feminist fashion through historical revisionism and, above all, one of the first to confront sustainability head-on and publicly denounce the devastating effects this industry has on the planet.

I admire her rebellion and how groundbreaking she was, undoubtedly a woman who did not hesitate to use the triviality of fashion to reach the most powerful and popular consciences of society.

Vivienne Isabel Swire, better known as Vivienne Westwood (born on April 8, 1941, in Derbyshire, England), was a schoolteacher before marrying Derek Westwood in 1962 (they divorced in 1965). A self-taught designer, in 1965 Westwood met and moved in with McLaren, the future manager of the punk band Sex Pistols, and together they pursued a career in the fashion world.

Shortly after Westwood and McLaren presented Pirates, their first commercial prêt-à-porter collection, in 1981, they ended their personal relationship. They remained professional partners for five more years, but Westwood soon established her identity as a leading independent designer.

Aside from her connection to bridal designs, she created the famous dress that Carrie Bradshaw, the character played by Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City, wore for her wedding. She also designed Miley Cyrus' dress for her wedding to actor Liam Hemsworth.

After a lifetime dedicated to fashion, she passed away in London at the age of 81 on December 29, 2022.
